Quick and fun exercises you can do during the holidays with family.
The holiday season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate, than to get out and spend time with your family! Some of our most precious moments that we spend together during the holidays are with our kids, friends and loved ones on family walks, trips to the park, or playing games in our yard. Whether you’re traveling to visit family, or hosting guests at your home, there are several fun ways you can get your body moving for a workout that will refresh you and your family with a little bit of exercise.
Go for a Walk
The easiest way to squeeze in some exercise is to just take a walk. Invite your family members to join you and you can walk and talk. You can take them on your favorite route if you’re home, or explore your family’s neighborhood if you’re away visiting for the holidays. Going for a walk is a great way to catch up and get your blood moving for some energy and a refresh. If you want a tougher workout, that is also more scenic, try going for a hike. It’s a beautiful way to spend time with family, plus you’ll all get good exercise before dinner!
Visit a Local Park
Do you need a destination for your walk? Why not go to the park? By getting your family out to the park, the kids can have some free time to play and explore, while everyone else can share some fresh air too. While you’re out, you could also try one of my park workouts! Maybe your sibling or cousin will join in with you!
Play a Game
The holidays are a perfect time to gather and play a fun game. Does your family have a favorite sport? Games like touch football, soccer, kickball, ultimate frisbee, crochet, bocce ball, and softball only require a little bit of equipment, but anyone can join in! No matter your favorite sport, playing together will help everyone have a good time and get in some exercise. You could even have a prize for the winning team, maybe the losing team has to make lunch!
Start a Dance Party
Impromptu dance parties are a mainstay in our household! Whenever the kids need to release some energy, or even if we just hear a favorite song, we turn up the beat for a family dance party. Create a playlist of your family’s favorite songs on your phone and grab the hand of grandma and grandpa so everyone can show off their moves. Soon enough, you’ll realize you’ve all been dancing for 30 minutes and you snuck in a workout.
Take 30 Minutes for Yourself
The holidays can be particularly tiring and stressful for moms. We are often the keepers of holiday magic, schedules, preferences, shopping, and caretaking — which is rewarding, but it can also draining. Time for a recharge! If you’re feeling like you need to take some time for yourself, you should do it. Ask a family member to watch the kids for 30 minutes, so you can get out for a run, walk, or do one of my quick 30-minute workouts. I promise you’ll feel good and cherish this simple gift to yourself.
Thanksgiving doesn’t have to throw you o your game. Eat well, feel better!
